Glaucoma is called "the sneak thief of sight," since there are often no immediate symptoms of this condition, and people may not even know that they have it until the disease has advanced significantly. Untreated glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide, so testing for it during an eye exam is very important. This condition most frequently results from an imbalance inside of the eye that leads to increased inner eye pressure.
Over three million Americans, and over 60 million people worldwide, have this condition. Experts estimate that half of them don’t know they have it, and would not know without getting a comprehensive eye exam. Glaucoma causes blindness if not treated early enough, and once vision is lost, it is permanent.
At Scarsdale Eye Associates we use the most modern technology to identify and treat glaucoma. Although there is no cure for glaucoma, early detection and treatment can help stabilize and preserve vision. For most patients, treatment is with an eye drop, once or twice a day. When necessary, we offer in-office laser treatments for our patients with glaucoma.
